hilltop french country
PROJECT MUSE
Admittedly, it took us a minute to recognize our client’s vision. She had found a ranch home that she sought to transform into a gracious airy enclave right out of the South of France, blue shutters and all.
However, as soon as we saw the architectural plans we were sold. The vaulted ceilings in the great room and kitchen provided an opportunity for an interior that markedly differed from the traditional interiors we were accustomed to designing.
Our client knew that she wanted a crisp white great room accented throughout by saturated colors. The adjacent dining room and den provided two jewel box moments where we leaned into hand-painted chinoiserie and a burgundy lacquer. The result was a collection of intimate and cozy rooms all connected by an ethereal and breathtaking epicenter.
I can firmly say now that I will never look at a ranch home the same again...
NOTEWORTHY MOMENT
I also can’t sit here and tell you that insanely gorgeous spaces are as easy as pie to create. This kitchen was an absolute challenge from every level. We learned more about seamless inset cabinetry design than I ever thought possible.
The fully transparent glass cabinets abutting the windows flanking the sink presented a whole new bevy of challenges. What would we line the interior of the windows with? Would the tile run up to the window’s edge? The window panes on the cabinets would need to perfectly mirror those of the windows behind them and then this design be reflected throughout the rest of the kitchen.
It is this very type of project that pushes us to become better designers. It may not be the easiest road taken but the knowledge accumulated along the way elevates the payoff of spaces like this to another level.
I like to say that we will learn everything there is to know about interior design just in time to retire. In the meantime, we can’t wait to learn all there is to know!
